The branch of biology that uses computational techniques to analyze and model how the components of a biological system There are two types of systems: open and closed. An open system is one in which energy can be transferred between the system and its surroundings. The stovetop system is open because heat can be lost into the air. A closed system is one that cannot transfer energy to its surroundings. Biological organisms are open systems. Now scientists use systems biology approaches to understand the big picture of how all the pieces interact in an organism. The above illustration depicts an interactome, the whole set of molecular interactions in cells.

Systems biology does not represent the revolution in the sense of Kuhnian paradigm shift. It is more of an integrative endeavor, where much of the biological and other sciences are accepted. Hence, systems biology may serve as a good example for other sciences, such as physics, where the problem of scientific revolution is omnipresent. Dr. Nathan Price, ISB's Associate Director, shares his explanation of systems biology and why the systems approach is necessary and inevitable.

It is a biology-based interdisciplinary field of study that focuses on complex interactions within biological systems, using a holistic approach (holism instead of the more traditional reductio Systems Biology is a system's level approach to biological complexity aimed to provide complete understanding of those phenomena that take place in living systems beyond the molecular-level scale. In spite of the long tradition within western science of the reductionist approach, such a view has been shown to be seriously flawed in most circumstances. Model biological system philosophy: We are unlikely to ever know everything about every organism. Therefore, we should agree on some convenient organism(s) to study in great depth, so that we can use the experience of the past (in that organism) to build on in the future.

Advances in the understanding of biological systems and in the computational interpretation of those systems have enabled biologists to program mammalian cells. For example, the interdisciplinary team has built the first model of CD95-induced apoptosis using systems biology approaches: the death of cells is induced when a suitable molecule (ligand) binds to the CD95 surface receptor on the cell membrane. 2013-11-24 · A 'system' in biology is any interconnected, interacting, coordinated and hierarchical assembly of biological components or elements—an organized assemblage with identifiable behavior. For example, the vertebrate body is an assembly of diverse, interacting organs, among other components, behaving to survive and reproduce.
